Life is Beautiful (English: Lovely Is Life) is a 2000 Italian film directed by Luciano Taviani and co-written, with Vincenzo Vassallo and the Taviani Brothers, by the director's father Luchino Visconti. The story was inspired by Ivo Andric's play "The Bridge on the Drina". The film proved to be a major European and worldwide success, thanks in part to the pre-release screening of A Room with a View ("La camera della signora Duluth") which had been shot before the script was written. It was also seen in another version, in German (Pfade der Zeit) and in English (A Room with a View). The film won three David di Donatello awards: Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor for Gian Maria Volonte. On the occasion of these celebrations, Taviani recalled: "I still cannot believe that we were able to make such a great movie, with such fine actors and such a beautiful cinematography. When we started shooting, we went to Rome and shot 150 days of work. We had already shot the film [in Italian] in Rome [before]. We did some special scenes, some scenes that excited us so much that they needed to have the exact intensity of the camera work. We shot here in Rome. The film was developed for Italian Television, which meant that there were cuts and cuts, cuts everywhere. Our editor Franco Razzolini could not follow us back to Italy because he suffered from a terrible illness. His friends made him go home, but he died very soon after returning to Rome." The editor who helped Luciano Taviani with his film was Franco Razzolini. He died just one day before the film's premiere at the International Film Festival in Cannes on 25 May 2000 "for reasons of health". The movie was released in cinemas on 27 May 2000. The movie takes place during the Second World War when Italy becomes an ally of Nazi Germany. Two brothers moved into the apartment of their younger brother. The two brothers, Mica and Elio, are six years apart in age. Mica is an idealistic painter who has spent his life painting scenery with great beauty; Elio is a doctor who has spent his life working with desperate people. The two brothers are struggling to come to terms with the war. Mica seeks escape through art; he comes up with the idea of creating a picture that will depict his view of war.
